Alarming data

Accidents at home have taken on alarming proportions not only in our country but also at international level.
A multi-scope survey on “Aspects of daily life” conducted by ISTAT has found that, in Italy, there are each year 3 million 672 thousands accidents at home, involving 3 million 48 thousand people, 68,000 of which are children.
The data tell us that emerged lesions responsible for permanent disability are more frequent than road accidents (severe disabilities, mental retardation).
As noted by the World Health Organization, this type of events, which does not spare any age group, in developed countries is the leading cause of death for children, although the group most affected is that of housewives (58% of domestic incidents).
Of those accidents more than seven thousand have been fatal outcome.
The place inside the house where occur most trauma is the kitchen, followed by the living room, the bedroom and the garden. The most frequent cause is trauma from the fall and from crushing.

The following charts were prepared by the Ministry of Health, in order to provide a framework of the year 2000, regarding the phenomenon of accidents at home and during leisure, as is apparent from the list of access to first aid centers of many hospitals that have participated in the project.
